2025 WASSCE English Exam Not Cancelled, WAEC Confirms

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has denied rumors suggesting that the English Language examination held as part of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates was cancelled.

A fabricated press statement, dated Friday, May 30, 2025, spread across various social media platforms, falsely alleged that the English Language paper conducted on May 28 had been annulled and would be rescheduled.

But on Tuesday, WAEC released a statement in which it dismissed the claim as untrue and attributed it to “mischief-makers.”

“The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council.

“The said examination has not been cancelled,” the message, signed by Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, declared.

Though the origin of the misleading press release remains unclear, WAEC stressed that its official updates are only shared through authentic channels.

The statement further said, “The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination.”

WAEC also appealed to the general public — including students, their parents, and schools — to ignore such unconfirmed stories and pay attention only to announcements from credible sources.

“All pieces of information from the council are disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country.

“In the same vein, all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the council added.

To reassure those concerned, WAEC expressed gratitude for the ongoing support it has received in its 73 years of operation and reaffirmed its dedication to providing quality services to Nigerian students.

“Once again, we thank all stakeholders for the confidence reposed in us… and we promise to always seek innovative ways to render quality services to the Nigerian child,” WAEC said.

Earlier reports indicated that the exam took place much later in the evening than scheduled on May 28, 2025.

These developments, based on various accounts, may have led to the spread of misinformation suggesting the exam had been cancelled.

WAEC, however, said that the delay was a result of tightened security protocols to prevent cheating and leaks of exam materials.

An exclusive report also revealed that some WAEC personnel may have been involved in leaking the English Language exam questions, which reportedly appeared online four days ahead of the test.
