6 Nigerian students win outstanding Cambridge awards
Six students from three Nigerian secondary schools have won the World Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards for the June and November 2023 Cambridge examination series.
Mrs Lucy Pearson, Country Director of the Nigeria British Council, said this at the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards in Lagos on Thursday night.
The British Council, in partnership with Cambridge International Examinations, recognises outstanding achievements among students from various British Council partner schools in Nigeria.
Pearson stated that the awards were given to students who scored the best global marks in English as a second language (speaking endorsement).
The country director stated that two Nigerian students achieved the feat in the June 2023 Cambridge Examination series, while four emerged from the November 2023 series.
She stated that the six Nigerian students were from Brookstone School, James Hope College in Lagos, and The Ambassadors Group of Schools.
According to the country director, Oluwademilade David and Omaghomi Sharon of Brookstone School won the June 2023 series.
She also mentioned Obodoechi Chiedozie, Favour Chinecherem, and Fehintoluwa Erinayo from James Hope College in Lagos, as well as Bamidele Sharon from the Ambassadors Group of Schools.
Pearson also stated that 95 students from 37 British Council partner schools in Nigeria had accomplished the incredible accomplishment of receiving the highest marks in the British Council partner schools in Nigeria.
She said, “These are in subjects such as Sociology, ICT, and Business Studies. This award is granted to students who have obtained the highest marks in the world in a single subject.
“Additionally, 71 students received the Top in Nigeria awards for achieving the highest standard mark in the country for individual subjects.
“Further accolades included 48 High Achievement Awards and eight Best Across Awards, recognising students with the highest cumulative standard marks across multiple subjects.
“We use strict criteria to calculate Cambridge Awards. These criteria ensure that the achievements we recognise are consistent across the world in all subjects and at all qualification levels,” the official said.
Pearson stated that globally acknowledged qualifications enabled students to attend the greatest colleges, find incredible employment opportunities, and prepare for a more satisfying life.
The country director stated that the council was proud to collaborate with its partner schools to give United Kingdom assessments and qualifications in Nigeria.
Mr Juan Visser, Cambridge University’s Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa International Education, congratulated Nigerian students on their academic achievements in the June and November 2023 test series.
According to Visser, every aspect of Cambridge education, including the curriculum, teaching and learning, resources, and evaluation, is deliberately planned to help students reach their maximum potential.
“The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards recognises exceptional performances around the world in Cambridge examinations.
“The awards reflect the talent and hard work of learners and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of their teachers and parents.
“With the qualifications that they have gained, Cambridge learners are well prepared to take on exciting opportunities that lie ahead and achieve their dreams.
Oluwademilade David, speaking on behalf of the honorees, expressed their delight at being honoured. He stated that recognition required hard work. He advised Nigerian students to do their best in their studies.
