EPKOMA (Sundiata Post) – Edo Prof. Goddy Agbeboh of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, says knowledge of Mathematics can be effectively utilised to advance Nigeria’s technology and national development.
Agbeboh, a professor of Mathematics,
stated this on Tuesday in Ekpoma, at the 109th inaugural lecture of the university with the theme: ”Demystifying Mathematics”
He also said that effective use of Mathematical knowledge could be a veritable tool to tackle security challenges .
The professor said that it was wrong to perceive Mathematics as a difficult and ”not to be attempted missionary journey”
”Mathemstics is actually one of the easiest of all the sciences that are key to the development and growth of any nation,” he said.
Agbeboh further said that developed nations had taken advantage of their mathematical knowledge to advance their technologies and national growth without asking for technology transfer.
”It suffices to say that the rhetoric approach to the study of mathematics and other sciences is responsible for the slow pace of technological and economic advancement in Nigeria.
”Science is discovery, and discovery is the foundation of technology which involves risk-taking.
”Instead of encouraging our scientists and technologists to take risks through experiment, invention and reinvention, we prefer to transfer technology.
”Transfer of technology is more expensive than developing indigenous technology which can lead to advancement and true independence of the country,” he said.
Earlier, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Asomwan Adagbonyin, said that as a science of numbers, Mathematics was often misunderstood and considered a nightmare among students.
Rpresented by the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Theophilus Agweda, Adagbonyin said that the university treated the study of Mathematics with huge commitment.
