FCT security tightened as SSANU, NASU converge for protest

ABUJA (Sundiata Scholar) – There is heightened security in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and those of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) gathered for a protest on Thursday.

Reports that a few of the demonstrators were on the premises of the Unity Fountain, with security personnel locking some of them outside.

Following agitation from the protesters, the gate was left open and those involved proceeded to block the entrance of the aforementioned venue with their vehicles.

Members of SSANU and NASU are protesting over demands regarding payment of their four months’ withheld salaries and the renegotiation of the 2010 agreement with the Federal Government among others.

Along with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), both unions had gone on strike in 2022.

President Bola Tinubu had given a directive that those affected be paid four-month salaries, and SSANU and NASU members claimed the wages were not paid, while ASUU members were paid.

The latest development is a follow-up national protest.
