NBA warns Gombe students to avoid substance abuse

The Nigerian Bar Association Gombe State Branch has voiced concern over the rising prevalence of substance misuse, particularly among youths.

As a result, the NBA has emphasised the need to “catch them young” in its anti-drug campaign.

Vice Chairperson Mwalin Abdu urged the students to refrain from using illegal substances while also stressing the risks associated with such abuse during a sensitization campaign to mark the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was held at the Hassan Central Primary School.

This year’s commemoration, with the theme: The Evidence is Clear; Invest in Prevention and the sub-theme: ‘Effect of substance abuse on the prospects of the leaders of tomorrow,’ saw participants receive books and pens as souvenirs to pique their interest in the campaign.

Abdu warns that substance abuse can hinder the next generation’s ability to govern responsibly.

She added, “You are to abstain from drug abuse because it will affect the desired future you want. As NBA Gombe Branch, we feel it’s incumbent to tackle the menace through sensitisation.”

While answering students’ questions about the legal profession, Abdu encouraged them by stating that “the legal profession is a noble one. To become a young lawyer, you need to have a sound mind for good arguments.”
