Akwa Ibom University suspends student for abusing VC on Facebook
Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Ikot Akpaden has ‘indefinitely’ suspended its student, Joy Nkanang, for using a curse word on the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eno Ibanga, on Facebook.
Premium Times reports that Ms Nkanang, a 200 level student in the department of performing arts, had referred to the VC as ‘foolish’ in a Facebook post on May 5.
She had written to express her thought on rising insecurity on the university campus.
The Akwa Ibom indigene wrote: “AKSU what is happening? A dry cleaners shop was robbed last night along college road….”
The said post attracted several comments including one which called for protest in the school.
In reply to the call for protest, Nkanang wrote: “No…. we don’t want to spoil the schools image…. foolish vc.”
Her comment attracted the university’s attention which ultimately led to her suspension in a letter signed by the school registrar, John Udo, dated May 9.
The university described her comment as ‘gross misconduct’ and a ‘breach of matriculation oath’.
It also said Nkanang would remain suspended from studies and barred from entering the campus until the conclusion of investigation on her case.
Spokesperson of the university, Akaninyene Ibanga, was quoted as saying on Friday that Nkanang may be recalled or expelled from the university after investigation.
