The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has directed that the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Education Research Development Council (NERDC), and other relevant government institutions work with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to develop a comprehensive Citizenship Studies curriculum.
Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director-General of the NOA, stated that the directive comes after the FEC approved the inclusion of citizenship studies as a compulsory component of primary to tertiary education in Nigerian schools.
In a statement released on its X account on Thursday, the agency stated that the project aims to improve civic education for students by promoting a stronger awareness of their obligations as Nigerian citizens.
“FEC Directs the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria Education Research Development Council, and other relevant government institutions and stakeholders to work with the National Orientation Agency to develop a curriculum for Citizenship Studies,” it said.
According to the agency, Citizenship Studies will play an important role in the educational system by tackling various vital areas. It would educate students on their fundamental rights and responsibilities as Nigerian citizens, while also encouraging active engagement in civic duties and governance processes.
The curriculum will also emphasise national identity and solidarity, as well as pride and togetherness, by educating students about Nigeria’s cultural and political legacy.
Furthermore, the curriculum will encourage critical thinking, allowing students to examine societal concerns and provide solutions for national growth. Values of social justice and tolerance shall be promoted, with an emphasis on fairness and equality among people from different origins.
Furthermore, it would cultivate leadership traits and accountability in young Nigerians while increasing their awareness of global challenges from a Nigerian perspective.
“This curriculum development is part of broader efforts to instill patriotism and ensure that future generations can contribute positively to the nation’s growth and stability,” it added.
