Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced the creation of Nigeria’s first Sub-National Research Institute at Abdulkadir Kure University (AKU), Minna, during the university’s inaugural matriculation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session. The new institute will be dedicated to advancing research in agriculture, science, and innovation.
In his address to the 86 pioneer students, Governor Bago also announced a scholarship of N1 million for each student. He emphasised that 50 additional scholarship awards would be reserved for students who demonstrate outstanding character and academic excellence, particularly in medicine and health sciences.
Further investments in AKU’s development include securing N15 billion to fund the construction of new hostels and the Senate building, along with an additional N500 million to support the establishment of six new faculties. To attract top academic talent, the Governor also unveiled plans for scholarship and exchange programs for both lecturers and students, strengthening AKU’s educational and research capabilities.
AKU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Aliyu Paiko, celebrated the historic occasion, commending Governor Bago’s commitment to transforming education in Niger State. Professor Paiko described the Governor as a “beacon of hope,” praising his dedication to the institution’s growth.
He also announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) will visit AKU on November 15, 2024, to verify the establishment of six new faculties.
Echoing these sentiments, the Pro-Chancellor of AKU, Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, applauded Governor Bago’s vision and pledged that the university’s council would implement strategic measures to achieve world-class status for AKU.
