Reps Urge Universities to Prevent Unnecessary Delays, Setbacks in Student Research

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has called on Nigerian universities to prevent unnecessary delays and challenges for students completing their research projects, theses, and dissertations.

This appeal follows troubling reports about a lecturer from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who tragically passed away after a lengthy 13-year PhD programme, allegedly impacted by stress and depression related to prolonged supervision issues.

The Committee Chairman, Abubakar Hassan Fulata urged Ahmadu Bello University and other institutions to promote fair, supportive guidance from supervisors, helping students finish their studies on time.

Fulata further highlighted that several federal universities do not consistently apply federal character principles in hiring, advising newer institutions, such as the Federal University of Health Sciences Azare and Federal University Dutsin-Ma, to prioritise compliance with these essential guidelines.
