UNIBEN to honour 385 first-class graduates at its convocation

The University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, has announced the graduation of 385 first-class students across the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions.

This milestone will be celebrated during the institution’s 49th/50th convocation ceremonies on Friday and Saturday.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, 206 students earned first-class honours in the 2021/2022 session, while 179 achieved the distinction in the subsequent session.

Prof. Salami, the second female Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history, highlighted these achievements during a press briefing at the Ugbowo main campus, alongside the Vice-Chancellor-designate, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, SAN, and other key academic leaders.

She attributed the success to the collaborative efforts and commitment of the university’s management, staff, and students. “Their dedication and sacrifices towards academic excellence have been pivotal in attaining this remarkable feat,” she noted.

The ceremonies will also feature the conferment of awards, including postgraduate diplomas, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Distinguished individuals, such as Chief Leemon Ikpea, Dr. Kingsley Momodu, and Mrs. Veronica Igbe, will receive honorary doctorate degrees, while seven UNIBEN professors will be honoured as professors emeriti.

Activities leading up to the convocation include an interfaith service and a lecture titled “The Poor also Deserve Education: Our Founding Heroes’ Legacies in Educational Equity and Equality,” to be delivered by former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

This convocation marks a significant moment for UNIBEN, showcasing its continuous commitment to academic excellence and educational equity.
