Fire Incident at UI Hostel Leaves Students’ Belongings Destroyed

A midnight fire engulfed part of Queen Elizabeth Hall at the University of Ibadan (UI) yesterday, destroying students’ belongings.

The fire, which broke out around 1:30 a.m., caused panic as students rushed to safety. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

Reverend Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident: “The agency received a distress call at exactly 01:43 hrs from Miss Ibikunle Hallen. Immediately, fire personnel were deployed in the institution; they arrived in time.

“On getting to the place, it was discovered that two rooms at the upper floor at Queen Elizabeth Hall were affected. Belongings worth billions of naira were saved. No casualty was recorded. The fire was extinguished together with UI Fire Service personnel.”

The Student Union President, Comrade Aweda Bolaji, and Secretary, Comrade Ogundijo Japheth, expressed sympathy for the affected students.

They also commended the university management for their swift intervention, especially the efforts of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter Olapegba.
