NUC Approves New Programmes at Maranatha University Lagos, Including Law, Nursing
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has authorised Maranatha University Lagos (MUL) to launch seven new academic programmes. These include nursing, public health, health information management, physiotherapy, law, English and History and international relations.
A statement released by the university’s management noted that English and History would be offered at the university’s Okota campus, while the remaining five programmes would debut at the Lekki campus. The university now boasts 27 NUC-approved courses.
Maranatha University Lagos is a rapidly expanding, faith-based, metropolitan institution, guided by its motto: “Faith, Excellence, and Integrity.”
According to the management, the university’s mission is to deliver innovative academic offerings that equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for serving both the nation and humanity.
The statement also reaffirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria had granted the university a full license to operate as a private institution. This license, dated September 2, 2024, was endorsed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, and the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Mr. Chris J. Maiyaki.
The full statutory license replaced the provisional one initially given to Maranatha University after it satisfied the requirements of the Educational Acts Cap E3 of 2024, which include meeting the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and other operational guidelines. The NUC conducted a License Review Exercise at the university from April 14 to 16, 2024.
Describing itself as a Christian faith-based institution, the university emphasised its commitment to being “a world-class university built on the tripod of Faith, Excellence, and Integrity,” contributing to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria and globally. The management highlighted its focus on religious education and noted that a joint staff and student fellowship is held daily from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.
The name Maranatha, derived from Greek, translates to “The Lord is coming,” symbolising the university’s evangelical mission and a reminder of the second coming of Christ.
The university operates two campuses in Lagos: the Okota Campus in Okota-Isolo and the Lekki Campus at Km 47 on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, where academic activities are fully underway. Both campuses provide secure residential facilities for male and female students, modern infrastructure, laboratories, interactive classrooms, and a well-equipped central library.
The university is also fostering a robust academic culture through workshops, conferences, and a Distinguished Lecture Series.
Prominent guest speakers have included Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, Director of NITDA Hub at the University of Lagos, who delivered a lecture in May 2023 on “Education Design and Delivery in the World of Robots and AI,” and Prof. Toyin Falola from the University of Texas at Austin, USA, who presented the first University Distinguished Lecture in October 2023 on “Technologies and African Cultures.”
On linkages and partnerships, Maranatha University is a member of the Conurbation of Universities in Lagos. It has partnerships with Nigerian institutions and is working on Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with international institutions, including some in Poland.
In terms of technology adoption, the university features a campus-wide internet facility, utilises advanced software for administrative efficiency, supports modern teaching and learning, and maintains effective communication channels.
Staff training is also given significant attention, ensuring the university remains at the forefront of educational innovation.
