WASSCE Resit Is Not for Nigerian Candidates, Says WAEC Nigeria

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has refuted claims made by certain Nigerian media outlets suggesting that the body has introduced a resit exam scheduled for January and February for candidates who need to retake subjects in their Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The council clarified that the report did not originate from Nigeria and is not applicable to Nigerian candidates. Instead, it pertains to Ghanaian candidates, as it came from the Ghana office of WAEC.

In the circulated report, the WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, was cited as the source. However, Kapi is a Ghanaian working with the Ghanaian branch of WAEC.

Since 2017, during the tenure of Mr. Olu Adenipekun as the Head of the National Office, WAEC Nigeria has introduced its own series of exams for private candidates, a move similar to what Ghana implemented this year.

Mr. Patrick Areghan, who succeeded Adenipekun and retired two years ago, continued this practice. The current Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut, has also maintained this structure.

As a result, the organisation now holds three annual exam diets in Nigeria. These include the traditional May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates, the November/December examination (formerly known as GCE) for private candidates, and the first series of the WASSCE for private candidates.

WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, confirmed that the circulating report was misleading and not relevant to Nigerian candidates.

She also emphasized that the first series of the WASSCE diet for private candidates, typically held between February and March, remains unchanged. The organisation is set to conduct this year’s edition as scheduled.
