Lagos Government Closes School Following Toddler’s Drowning Incident
The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School, located at Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, after a toddler died in the school’s swimming pool.
A statement issued by Kayode Sutton, the deputy director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed that the school was closed on Friday.
The statement, released on Saturday, stated that the closure was necessary to allow the government to conduct preliminary investigations into the death of the two-year-old female student.
Mr. Sutton expressed the government’s deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the child.
He mentioned that the school’s proprietor, the head of the nursery section, and the child’s teacher were being questioned by the police.
He also noted that the pool instructor and two caregivers were being interrogated.
Mr. Sutton further urged school owners and caregivers to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent accidents in schools and across the state.
