NANS Threatens to Close FRSC Offices Over Order to Seize Vehicles

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has pledged to shut down Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) offices that attempt to enforce a directive to seize vehicles belonging to its members.

In a statement released by the Clerk of the Senate, NANS National Headquarters, Oladimeji Uthman, and shared with journalists in Ibadan, the student organization condemned the recent order issued by the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, instructing officers to detain and confiscate vehicles linked to NANS structures.

Uthman labeled the directive as disrespectful and an attack on NANS’ operations, cautioning that any attempt to implement the policy would trigger large-scale demonstrations.

“If any FRSC command arrests or impounds NANS vehicles—whether at the national, zonal, Joint Campus Council (JCC), or other levels—we will mobilise our armless battalions and stage massive protests to defend our rights. We will not tolerate any form of disrespect towards our organisation,” Uthman stated.

The statement emphasized the long-standing collaboration between NANS and the FRSC, pointing out that transportation is crucial for its advocacy efforts, initiatives, and duties.

“Over the years, NANS has maintained a working relationship with the FRSC at both state and national levels, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation for the safety and welfare of Nigerian students. The directive to impound our vehicles undermines this relationship and disrupts our structured movement,” the statement continued.

NANS urged the FRSC leadership to engage in meaningful discussions to resolve the matter peacefully. Uthman called on the Corps Marshal to prioritize dialogue rather than actions that could heighten tensions.

“Engaging in discussions will help resolve issues peacefully and avoid unnecessary confrontations between NANS and FRSC officials,” he remarked.

Reaffirming NANS’ dedication to advocating for Nigerian students, Uthman assured that the association would remain committed to maintaining responsible and responsive leadership in its interactions with government agencies.
