President Bola Tinubu has provided Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to students across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to help address transportation difficulties.
The six buses were allocated through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Student Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon, and handed over to the Zonal Coordinators of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) during a ceremony in Abuja.
During the event, NANS President Lucky Emonefe formally transferred the keys to the designated Zonal Coordinators, highlighting that the buses would contribute to a more effective and cost-friendly transportation system for students.
Speaking at the distribution, Asefon described the program as part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to support student welfare, particularly in response to the elimination of fuel subsidies and the subsequent increase in transportation expenses.
“This is a significant step, but it is just the beginning,” Asefon assured, emphasizing that the Tinubu administration remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritizing student welfare.
He pointed out that, previously, students had to rent buses at extremely high prices—sometimes reaching N200,000—to attend conferences, events, or navigate their campuses. With these newly provided buses, he explained, students would only need to pay a minimal fee, making transportation significantly more affordable.
“The buses are not just for transport; they also provide students with the confidence that they are using vehicles dedicated to their needs,” Asefon added.
He also revealed that the buses’ maintenance would be strictly supervised, ensuring that any problems would be promptly handled by his office. Additionally, schools where the buses are stationed would share responsibility for their upkeep to guarantee their long-term functionality.
NANS President Lucky Emonefe expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as an unprecedented initiative, stating that it would greatly lower transportation expenses for students.
“This is the first time in the history of NANS that we are witnessing such a gesture. Over 20 buses have been distributed to various zones, and this was achieved through constructive dialogue and leadership, not protests,” Emonefe said.
He continued, “These buses will be very useful to Nigerian students; they will ease the cost of transportation on our campuses. We are happy, and I want to thank the President.”
