UNIZIK Expels Student for Assaulting Lecturer in Dispute Over TikTok Recording

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has dismissed a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for physically attacking a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

An official expulsion letter, dated February 13, 2025, and signed by Acting Registrar Mr. Victor I. Modebelu, stated that the expulsion was based on the recommendation of the Student Disciplinary Committee. The committee determined that the student’s conduct constituted a serious breach of the institution’s disciplinary rules, specifically Regulation 4 (SDR).

The incident, which attracted significant public attention following the circulation of a viral video, allegedly involved Precious assaulting the lecturer, identified as Dr. Chukwudi Okoye.

The altercation reportedly occurred after the lecturer disrupted a TikTok video Precious was filming on campus. The situation led to widespread criticism and demands for disciplinary measures.

According to the expulsion letter, the decision is effective immediately, and the university has instructed Precious to leave the campus and return any university property in her possession.

This action underscores the firm stance of UNIZIK’s administration on upholding discipline within the university, a decision that has sparked various reactions.

The letter stated: “The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee on the case of your assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theater and Film Studies, which was found to be a gross misconduct and violation of the Students Disciplinary Regulations particularly Regulation 4 (SDR).

“Consequently, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion takes immediate effect.

“You are expected to vacate the University premises immediately and return any University property in your possession.”
