Only 12,590 out of 50,000 applicants gained admission into LASU, says VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, revealed that out of more than 50,000 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates who applied to the university for the 2024/2025 academic session, only 12,590, accounting for 25.2 per cent, successfully gained admission.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony for the newly admitted students, Olatunji-Bello assured them of a conducive learning environment that would enhance their academic journey. However, she advised them to maintain good behaviour and avoid vices that could jeopardize their academic success.
“As young men and women who are desirous of a brighter future, you are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of our university, and committed to your studies. LASU ranks ninth best among 298 universities in Nigeria.”
She encouraged the students to attend lectures regularly, complete their assignments, avoid deviant behaviours, dress decently, choose their friends wisely—since bad friends can corrupt good habits—and steer clear of cultism, examination malpractice, hooliganism, and other harmful activities. She warned that any student found guilty of such misconduct would face disciplinary action in accordance with the university’s regulations.
She further explained that while students enjoy a degree of freedom at the university, it comes with certain limitations and responsibilities, requiring both students and staff to always act appropriately.
“We want you to graduate in record time and positively impact society through your fields of endeavour, not only in Nigeria, but at a global scale and I wish you all well,” she concluded.
