FG Names Prof. Lucian Chukwu As Vice-Chancellor Of Admiralty University

The Federal Government has formally endorsed the appointment of Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor, Delta State.

A statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education disclosed that the appointment will cover a single tenure lasting five years, starting from February 28, 2025.

Before this appointment, Professor Chukwu held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Management Services at the University of Lagos.

However, the selection process for the Vice-Chancellor position at Admiralty University was reportedly plagued by controversies, with certain stakeholders accusing the process of attempting to undermine merit.

Folasade Boriowo, who serves as the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, stated that Prof. Chukwu secured 83.41 percent of the total votes cast out of the five candidates who were interviewed.

She explained, “The Governing Council of Admiralty University, Ibuzor, conducted the selection exercise for the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor on February 26 and 27, 2025, in the Council Chamber of the University.

“At the end of the exercise, Prof. Lucian O. Chukwu emerged as the highest scorer with 83.41 percent among the five interviewed candidates.”

“In line with the principle of merit upheld by the federal government, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has approved the appointment of Professor Lucian O. Chukwu as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor.

“The appointment is effective from February 28, 2025, for a single tenure of five years. The Honourable Minister wishes the new Vice Chancellor a successful tenure.”

Professor Obinna Lucian Chukwu completed his academic training at the University of Lagos, where he earned a Doctorate in Ecosystem Health and Pollution Management.

He subsequently pursued post-doctoral training in Integrated Coastal Management at the Coastal Resources Institute, located at the University of Rhode Island, USA.

With over two decades of teaching experience, Prof. Chukwu has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Lagos and has successfully supervised and graduated numerous PhD and M.Sc. candidates.

His scholarly work has resulted in the publication of several peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals, primarily focusing on ecosystem health and pollution management.

Prof. Chukwu has also provided consultancy services to various national and international organizations, including the Federal Ministry of Environment, contributing his expertise to several Environmental Impact Assessment Studies (EIA).

Additionally, he has led multiple EIA Studies, ensuring adherence to both World Bank Guidelines and IFC Performance Standards, covering sectors such as Aviation, Infrastructure, Ports and Harbors, and Oil and Gas.

His professional engagements extend to membership in key groups, including the Environmental Impact Study Group for the Nationally Coordinated Research Programme (NCRP) funded by the World Bank, and participation in the Expert Group Review Panel for the GEF International Waters Project under the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan, in collaboration with UNIDO in Vienna, Austria.

He has also served as the IMO International Regional Expert in Coastal and Marine Environment for West Africa, where he supported the Glo-Ballast Partnership Programmes under the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem (GCLME), and worked as UNIDO’s International Regional Expert on Integrated Coastal Management for initiatives under the NEPAD Environmental Action Plan.

Prof. Chukwu has actively participated in and contributed as a resource person to numerous national and international conferences, workshops, and training sessions held across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

He holds memberships in several professional associations, including the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN), the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), the Nigerian Association for Aquatic Sciences (NAAS), and the International Water Association (IWA) headquartered in the UK.

Professor Chukwu is happily married and blessed with children.
