Sanwo-Olu Approves Infrastructure Upgrade for LASUCOM

The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is set to undergo major infrastructural improvements following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s approval of various expansion and renovation projects for the institution.

These projects, assigned to contractors and overseen by the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), mark the first phase of a long-term development plan aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare services in Lagos State.

Among the approved projects are the renovation of LASUCOM’s Histology/Anatomy Laboratories in Ikeja and the transformation of the CACOVID Centre at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, and the Cardo-Renal Center in Gbagada into college annexes.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, along with the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, visited the project sites on Wednesday, March 26, and Thursday, March 27, 2025. They inspected the facilities alongside the college executives and other key stakeholders, engaged with the contractors, and deliberated on the commencement of the project.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, the commissioner for health described it as a “crucial step in expanding the college and addressing the shortage of human resources in the health sector.”

He further noted that the first phase of the expansion is projected to be completed within four months, which will facilitate the establishment of new annexes for LASUCOM.

Echoing this view, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, stated, “This project is about a greater Lagos rising. By expanding the workforce in the health sector, we are securing the future of healthcare delivery in our state.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed great joy over the progress, stating, “I am the happiest person right now. The National Universities Commission (NUC), Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), and other accrediting bodies have promised to visit and commence their accreditation processes within a year.”

Additionally, the college’s provost, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support in advancing medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
