FUOYE Governing Council Grants Six-Month Leave to Vice-Chancellor, Fasina

The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has on Monday given approval for a six-month leave to be taken by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

According to a release signed by Mufutau Ibrahim, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, the Governing Council, during its 7th Emergency Meeting, which was held virtually on Monday, April 14, 2025, accepted Professor Fasina’s request to proceed on his accumulated annual and research leave, which will cover 126 working days out of a total of 228 days he is entitled to.

While he is away, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Olubunmi S. Shittu, has been selected to act as Vice-Chancellor for the duration, being the most senior of the three deputy vice-chancellors.

The statement says, “The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) at its 7th Emergency Meeting held online on Monday, 14th April, 2025, considered the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, to proceed on his accumulated Annual and Research Leave and approved six (6) months, being 126 working days out of his total entitlements of 228 days, with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.

“In addition, the Governing Council appointed Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, who is also the most senior of the three (3) Deputy Vice-Chancellors, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University for a period of six (6) months with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.”

This decision follows shortly after the university’s Governing Council completed its investigation into sexual harassment allegations that had earlier been made against the vice-chancellor by a senior staff member, Engr. Folasade Adebayo.

The council had earlier set up a panel in January to address the ongoing conflict, which included internal disagreements between the university’s management and the local chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

After an extraordinary meeting held on April 8, the council went through the submitted reports from the investigation committees and confirmed that no formal allegation of sexual harassment was filed against the vice-chancellor.

These conclusions matched the outcome of a prior investigation carried out by the Nigerian Police Force, which also found that the complainant had denied being harassed.

The council further condemned the act of secretly recording the vice-chancellor by Engr. Adebayo labeling it as a violation of the university’s regulations and something that could be used for extortion.

She was ordered to provide a written apology and was warned against taking further actions that might damage the image of the institution.
