Student gunned down in alleged cult clash near Yabatech

A student from Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) was fatally shot on Tuesday in an incident suspected to be connected to cult violence, which occurred near the back entrance of the institution shortly after the student completed his examinations.

Witnesses reported that the student, whose name has yet to be revealed, was confronted by a group of youths and shot twice at close range by the assailants, who then escaped the scene, leaving the victim bleeding openly in broad daylight.

CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident through an official statement, noting that seven individuals had been apprehended in relation to the killing.

He explained that the police got an emergency alert at about 3 p.m. from the Sabo Division, stating that a suspected cult member had been shot by members of a rival cult group.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the body of the victim lying in a pool of blood with evident gunshot injuries and recovered four live bullets and charms from the victim’s pockets—items that suggested the victim had ties to cult activities. His remains were then taken to the mortuary for autopsy.

Hundeyin stressed that the police were actively investigating the details of the murder. He raised concerns over the growing number of cult-related incidents in Lagos and called on the public to support the police by sharing useful information to help eliminate these criminal networks.

As efforts to uncover the truth behind the ongoing violence continue, members of the community are encouraged to stay alert and report anything suspicious.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying efforts against cultism, assuring citizens that their safety remains a top priority in Lagos.
