Kano Allocates N51.5 Billion for Projects in Infrastructure, Education, Other Sectors

The Executive Council of Kano State has given the go-ahead for a total of N51,575,700,575.96 to support a range of projects and initiatives designed to strengthen governance and improve citizens’ quality of life.

This information was shared in a statement issued on Wednesday by the State’s Commissioner for Information & Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.

Waiya stated that the financial allocation reflects the government’s strong dedication to promoting sustainable progress in essential sectors such as infrastructure, education, and public well-being.

He explained that a major part of the approvals includes N3,469,629,136.81 granted to the Ministry of Works for the installation of wireless, solar-powered traffic signals across Kano’s city areas under the Urban Renewal Programme.

His words: “The same ministry was granted N5,492,077,139.05 for rehabilitating and overlaying major roads, including routes from Gidan Mallam Aminu Kano (Mumbayya House) to Tal’udu Junction and Sharada Road.”

He added, “Additionally, N390,361,730.83 was approved for elevator installations at Gidan Murtala and Gidan Ado Bayero, while N105,403,453.62 will fund the construction of a road linking Miller Road to Mission Road.”

He noted that the education sector was given notable attention, with N1,212,571,013.79 earmarked for upgrading the School for Islamic Studies located in the Dawakin Tofa, Tofa, and Ungogo local government areas.

He said that the Ministry of Education also received N327,780,226.89 to clear pending debts, and another N5,386,380,955.00 was approved for maintaining foreign scholarship schemes and initiating local ones.

To tackle the issue of water shortages, the Ministry of Water Resources was provided N1,698,800,000.00 to cover electricity, diesel, and fuel expenses for the Greater Kano Works and Water Board operations from January to March 2025.

The Council Chairman restated the government’s strong commitment to ending water scarcity, calling on citizens to exercise patience.

He mentioned that environmental programs were also given priority, as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change received N11,000,000.00 to pay 11 months of overdue stipends to 100 forest guards, as well as to implement a 100% increase in their monthly pay.

According to him, “The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation was granted N185,162,487.50 to clear dues for fibre optic installation and bandwidth subscriptions for 2023–2025.”

He further stated, “Land development efforts included N265,803,510.00 for compensating property owners affected by the expansion of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil and N81,142,850.00 for those impacted by the Panda–Hamdullahi–Albasu–Sakwayen Dutse road project.”

He said that public welfare was a major focus, with N15,667,634,645.10 set aside to pay severance gratuities and allowances owed to ex-councillors who served between 2014 and 2024.

He noted that the Office of the Secretary to the State Government was allocated N240,506,500.00 for the purchase of fire trucks intended for the Government House.

He added that the Council also approved religious infrastructure efforts, such as N115,959,502.88 for refurbishing the Juma’at Mosque at Amana City and N303,399,484.20 to build a new mosque in Rijiyar Gwangwan, Dawakin Kudu.
