Kano approves recruitment of 17,600 guards to secure public schools

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has authorized the immediate employment of 17,600 security guards throughout the state to strengthen safety in public schools.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

During a formal gathering in Kano, Governor Yusuf disclosed that 400 security staff would be assigned to each of the 44 local government areas in the state.

He explained that the plan is designed to safeguard both students and teachers while ensuring a protected school environment.

“This decision reflects our administration’s commitment to protecting our children and teachers from emerging security threats,” the governor said. “We cannot allow fear or insecurity to disrupt the education of our future leaders.”

The guards to be hired will undergo training and will be strategically positioned to monitor school entrances, identify suspicious behavior, and work in coordination with appropriate security bodies when needed.

This effort is a component of wider educational reforms being implemented by the Yusuf-led government. Additional steps include installing solar power in 200 public schools, distributing teaching materials, and a plan to give permanent jobs to qualified staff through the Better Education Service Delivery for All programme.

Governor Yusuf reiterated that security, education, and empowering young people remain central priorities of his government.

He urged parents, traditional leaders, and local communities to contribute to the ongoing mission to deliver safe and high-quality education to every child in the state.
