Protest Breaks Out in Benue Following Police Shooting of Final-Year Student

The fatal shooting of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old student in her final year at the Federal University, Wukari, by members of the police force has triggered a protest in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.

Reports indicate that Emmanuella was allegedly gunned down on the morning of Friday, May 16, 2025, by unidentified police officers at the Wurukum roundabout while she was in a car traveling from the Gyado Villa area of the city.

This heartbreaking event, which has led to widespread public anger, brought young people to the streets in protest, with notable gender rights advocate Ukan Kurugh taking the lead.

Protesters assembled at the Wurukum roundabout, holding placards bearing phrases like “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella.”

Those participating in the protest are calling for a full-scale probe and prompt response from those in power.
