NUC Grants Approval for 17 Academic Programmes at Federal University Lafia

The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for 17 academic programmes after the institution successfully met the necessary accreditation standards.

This was revealed in a press release distributed in Lafia by Mr. Abubakar Ibrahim, Director of Information and Public Relations.

According to Mr. Ibrahim, the Federal University of Lafia attained complete success in the 2023 and 2024 accreditation exercises carried out by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He highlighted that the university showcased its dedication to academic distinction by recording a 100 per cent success rate in the 2024 accreditation conducted by the NUC.

Ibrahim explained that the accreditation of the 17 academic programmes is part of the NUC’s ongoing process to evaluate the quality of academic offerings in Nigerian universities.

He further stated that with this approval, FULafia has shown its alignment with national educational benchmarks across all its programmes.

The approved programmes include those in the Faculty of Agriculture: Fisheries and Aquaculture, Forestry and Wildlife; and the Faculty of Allied Health Science: Medical Laboratory Science.

Also accredited in the Faculty of Arts are English and Literary Studies, French, and Theatre and Media Arts.

In the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Human Anatomy was granted “interim” accreditation, while Human Physiology received “full accreditation.”

Additionally, the Faculty of Computing received “interim” accreditation for Computer Science. The Faculty of Education had Business Education approved. The Faculty of Science secured accreditation for Biochemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology.

Further approved programmes include Social Work, Accounting, Business Administration, Psychology, Mass Communication, Geography and Environmental Management, Radiography, Nursing Science (“interim”), Arabic Studies, Christian Religious Knowledge, Hausa Language, Islamic Studies, Education Biology, Education Chemistry, Education Computer Science, Education Mathematics, Education Physics, and Integrated Science.

The university’s spokesperson credited the success of the accreditation process to the efforts of both academic and non-academic staff, the commitment of students, and the effective leadership of the university’s administration led by Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman and his team.

“We are deeply honoured by this achievement. It is a clear reflection of FULafia’s growing reputation for academic integrity, program quality, and continuous development. We remain committed to maintaining and surpassing these standards.”

Ibrahim reminded the public that as stated by the NUC, programmes granted full accreditation maintain that status for five years, while those with interim accreditation are valid for two years, after which they will undergo another evaluation.

He assured that the university is already taking necessary steps to address the issues raised in the interim report, particularly to ensure that Nursing Science obtains full accreditation during the next review cycle.

“FULafia continues to forge ahead as one of Nigeria’s leading public universities, dedicated to nurturing future leaders and delivering high-quality education,” Ibrahim promised.
