Teacher receives 12-year prison sentence for raping 11-year-old boy in Anambra

A court located in Awka, Anambra State, handed a 12-year jail term on Wednesday to a 34-year-old teacher, Pascal Ofomata, for raping an 11-year-old JSS 1 pupil.

The teacher, Ofomata, who was employed at St Christopher’s Junior Seminary 3-3 Onitsha, was tried on three counts: rape, inflicting physical injury, and sexual abuse, as stipulated under sections 3(1) and 4(1) of the Violence against Persons Prohibition Law, along with the charge of sexual abuse punishable under section 35(2) of the Child’s Right Law of Anambra State.

He pleaded not guilty to the allegations, insisting that he did not penetrate the victim’s anus.

However, Ofomata confessed in his police statement that he “sucked the victim’s penis and told the victim to kiss him.”

Following a comprehensive trial, which included testimonies from the victim’s doctor and the police investigator, the court determined the defendant was guilty and accepted the arguments made by the prosecution.

Justice Peace Otti found Ofomata guilty and issued a 12-year prison sentence.

Additionally, the court prohibited him from working in schools or in any institution that has individuals under 18, including primary, secondary, and even tertiary schools.

Furthermore, the court forbade him from being hired in any workplace with persons under 18, such as primary, secondary, and even tertiary institutions.
