UNICAL becomes latest beneficiary of OPay’s N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship initiative

OPay, a prominent financial services provider in Nigeria, has officially announced the addition of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) as the eighth institution to benefit from its notable N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship programme.
The company formalised the partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university to implement the scholarship scheme.
The event brought together OPay officials, top university administrators, and student representatives, showcasing OPay’s sustained dedication to helping academically talented Nigerian students by alleviating their financial burdens.
At the signing event, UNICAL’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, expressed her appreciation for the scholarship programme.
She said, “OPay’s generosity is deeply appreciated. This scholarship programme is a very welcome initiative. This scholarship programme, in addition to the existing support schemes, will help many of our students and inspire and encourage them to excel in their academics.”
OPay’s Head of Partnerships, Mr. IK Odiase, highlighted the role of education in fostering national growth and innovation.
“We are honoured to partner with the University of Calabar on this impactful journey over the next 10 years. Education is the cornerstone of nation-building, and we remain committed to ensuring that students across Nigeria have the support they need to succeed,” he said.
More than just financial aid, the initiative symbolizes a source of encouragement for numerous families and communities.
After earlier implementations at seven other universities this year, UNICAL has now joined the ranks of institutions benefiting from OPay’s intentional efforts to strengthen education in the country.
As OPay rolls out this scholarship initiative to additional universities, it underscores its belief that meaningful transformation starts with access to quality learning.
This long-term scholarship plan reflects OPay’s goal of cultivating talent and building a more inclusive and hopeful future for Nigeria’s youth
