Poly Ibadan renaming: Oyo deputy governor, officials meet student leaders behind closed doors

Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal is currently holding a private meeting with the leadership of the student union of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in response to a protest over the recent renaming of the institution by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The meeting, which is being held in the conference room of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), was organised by the state government following Monday’s demonstration that disrupted both academic and administrative operations on campus.

Present at the meeting are notable government representatives, including the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd); the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Soliu Abdulwaheed Adelabu; the Chairman of the Oyo State Youth Development Agency, Prince Falana Adebowale; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Victor Olojede.

The protest involved students shutting the main entrances of the institution and calling for a reversal of the name change, describing the decision as “insensitive” and “poorly communicated.”

As discussions continue, it is still unclear whether an agreement will be reached right away, particularly as Governor Makinde is currently out of the state on official business.
