Lagos closes Lekki school over sewage discharge into public drains

The Lagos State Government has sealed Global International College, situated in Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki, over allegations of illegally releasing untreated wastewater and faecal sludge into public drainage systems.

The enforcement was carried out on Saturday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), which operates under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the action in a statement issued via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He stated that the college was shut down for repeatedly breaching environmental regulations, even after being warned on multiple occasions.

“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Saturday, 5th July 2025, sealed off Global International College… for deliberately discharging untreated faecal sludge and wastewater into the public drains via a pumping machine, thereby causing public nuisance, pollution, and endangering human life,” Wahab stated.

He explained that the school had ignored several warnings, leading the regulatory body to carry out enforcement in line with state environmental laws.

Wahab appealed to both residents and institutions across Lagos State to practise responsible wastewater disposal and maintain good hygiene standards. He stressed the importance of proper environmental behaviour in safeguarding public health and sustaining the city’s ecosystem.

“Lagosians are enjoined to embrace proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to enhance public health and environmental sustainability,” the commissioner said.

He further stated that the state government would continue to take action against breaches of environmental regulations, warning that any behaviour harmful to public health and safety would result in penalties or legal consequences.

As of Saturday evening, the school remained closed pending further assessment by regulatory authorities.
