16-year-old Benue student beats teacher to death

A 16-year-old student of UBE Junior Secondary School, Oju Centre, in Benue State, has been taken into custody following the death of his teacher after a confrontation that occurred on Thursday.

The student, named Friday Ogamude, reportedly attacked his 35-year-old teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, during an argument said to be linked to a cap the teacher had confiscated in May 2025. The incident took place on the school grounds in Oju Local Government Area.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama initially reported the case in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the teacher collapsed after the student allegedly hit him.

Mr. Oyibe was quickly taken to Amara Hospital in Oju, where he was later declared dead by a medical doctor.

The Benue State Police Command has arrested the suspect and confirmed that an investigation into the matter is currently ongoing. The body of the late teacher has been taken to the General Hospital in Oju for an autopsy.

In a statement, the police denounced the act and reassured the public that a full investigation is in progress. The authorities also stated that proper legal measures will be carried out depending on the findings of the inquiry.
