Students Must Reapply Yearly for Upkeep Loans – NELFUND

Nigerian tertiary students will now be required to submit new applications for upkeep loans at the start of every academic session, according to an announcement by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Under this updated policy, funds will no longer be carried over automatically once an academic year at a tertiary institution comes to an end.
Rather than continuing payments by default, students moving into a new academic session must reapply in order to continue receiving upkeep assistance.
“Upon the conclusion of an institution’s academic year, upkeep payments for that session shall automatically cease.
“Students who transition into a new academic year will no longer receive upkeep disbursements for the preceding session,” NELFUND explained.
The organisation added that its loan application portal is currently being updated to reflect this new process.
NELFUND mentioned that the enhanced platform will only show the upkeep funds each student has received for a particular academic session, as part of efforts to increase openness.
It also urged academic institutions to upload their official calendars and academic session information without delay, in order to enable eligible students to access their full upkeep entitlements.
“Interested loan applicants are required to apply for the loan at the beginning of every academic session to be eligible for both institutional charges and upkeep for that particular session.
“To ensure accuracy and transparency, the NELFUND loan portal is being automated to reflect this adjustment.
“The portal will henceforth display only the upkeep loans that have been collected by each student within the relevant session,” it said.
Reiterating its pledge, the agency declared, “NELFund remains committed to providing accessible, transparent, and efficient loan support to Nigerian students and counts on the cooperation of all stakeholders.”
