UNIZIK places indefinite ban on ‘signing off’ celebrations for final-year students

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), located in Awka, Anambra State, has introduced a permanent ban on the widely observed ‘signing off’ ritual conducted by graduating students upon completion of their examinations.
The announcement was made through a statement signed by the university’s registrar, Dr Chinenye Okeke, and circulated to journalists on Thursday in Awka, stating that the prohibition takes effect immediately.
Okeke explained that the decision was prompted by recurring incidents of disorder, violence, and disruption to regular academic operations that have been associated with the celebration.
She noted that the university’s management was particularly concerned about unauthorised individuals who often gain access to the campus during such events, posing safety threats to both staff and students.
“The university emphasised that the ‘signing off’ practices have grown into unruly gatherings, sometimes resulting in disorderly conduct, threats to safety and property damage.”
“It warned that any student found engaging in the act would face severe disciplinary actions, including possible rustication.”
“It also warned outsiders against entering the campus to partake in or encourage the banned activity.”
“Such violators risk arrest and prosecution for breach of peace,’’ she said.
She reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to ensuring a secure environment and upholding academic integrity.
Okeke encouraged students to focus on their academic pursuits and to promptly report any misconduct or threats to the relevant university authorities.
“With this decision, the institution aligns itself with other universities across Nigeria in cracking down on unruly final-year ‘sign out’ celebrations, placing safety and order above tradition.”
