Ms Maria Obonyo, an 80-year-old woman has enrolled as a student in Jesus is King Nursery and Primary School in Bugandalo Village, Ibulanku Sub-county in Bugweri District, and aims to become a teacher.
Ms Obonyo who is a farmer said she decided to go to school to learn how to speak and write English after enduring suffering and ridicule. She said she had lost all her relatives and has nobody to care of her, but she’s determined to study until she graduates from Makerere University as a teacher.
Ms Obonyo expressed challenges she currently faces, such as being unable to complete her school fees amounting to Shs35,000 per term, and poor accomodation.
She has recieved positive remarks from school staff like head teacher, Ms Olivia Kwagala, who says Ms Obonyo has made the school proud by studying at such an age and is confident she will complete Primary Seven.
