The Abia State Government has delayed the resumption date for both public and private schools in the state for the 2024/2025 academic year.
Mr Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information, stated this during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting in Umuahia, citing a coinciding Muslim holiday as the reason for the postponement.
According to him, schools across the state will now begin on Wednesday, September 23, rather than Monday, September 16, as planned.
This was after he announced that the second batch of teacher training would begin on September 11 and end on September 20.
The exercise, according to him, will be done simultaneously at three centres: Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, adding that 1800 teachers are being targeted.
He said the training was part of the ongoing transformation agenda of the current administration in the education sector.
The Commissioner stated that more than 200 teachers were trained in the first batch, which was part of the school resumption protocols.
He also revealed that the state government had provided a 90-day moratorium to owners of unregistered lands in Aba to register them at the old rate.
