Abia to Implement Free Basic Education Policy in 2025
The Abia State Government has announced plans to introduce compulsory free education for primary schools and Junior Secondary Schools 1–3 starting in 2025, following approval by Governor Alex Otti.
This development was revealed by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, in Umuahia on Friday during a reception for Abia State students who excelled in the 27th National Junior Engineers, Technicians, and Scientists (JETS) competition recently held in Abuja.
Ubochi stated that the free education initiative is part of Governor Otti’s broader efforts to revolutionise the state’s education sector.
He also praised the JETS competition as a valuable platform for students to demonstrate their ingenuity and creativity, encouraging them to devise innovative solutions to complex challenges while advancing their academic abilities.
In their comments, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, and the Executive Board Chairman of ASUBEB, Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, attributed the students’ outstanding success to the state government’s strong commitment to education.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Abia, Friday Madu, also commended the students for their exceptional performance at the national JETS competition.
The students were rewarded with learning equipment, while their teachers received cash incentives from the state government.
