Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor of Ondo State, has announced plans to improve infrastructure and security on and around the Adekunle Ajasin University campus in Akungba-Akoko.
The governor made the remark on Saturday during an unexpected visit to the university to review some of the issues that students encounter there.
Following the tour, the governor directed the state’s Ministry of Infrastructure to commence rehabilitation of the alternate route leading to the AAUA campus.
“There had been a series of accidents near the university due to the road’s topography, where vehicles, particularly trucks and lorries, lose control and run into the school gate area, resulting in tragic loss of lives,” he said.
“We are now working on creating alternative routes for heavy vehicles, which will be included in our budget. Our goal is to enhance the safety and quality of life for the university community, which comprises over 20,000 students. We are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and amenities to support them,” the governor said.
Professor Olugbenga Ige, Vice Chancellor of the University, led the governor on a tour of the main gate and the alternate path into the campus.
The university community has been using the alternate road leading to the school’s second gate since the main gate was closed due to the constant loss of life caused by accidents on it.
Professor Ige reminded the governor that previous efforts to rebuild the alternative road in recent years had failed, while management had opened up more routes for staff and students to commute.
