Anambra school emerges winner in National Girls in ICT Competition with groundbreaking VR technology
Yesterday, St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, won the national championship title in the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024 thanks to their virtual reality project. The Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy is hosting the National Girls in ICT Competition, a technological innovation competition open to all female secondary school students in Nigeria.
Their innovative project, M-Tag VR, allows users to explore iconic landmarks like Zuma Rock and learn about fascinating cultural aspects of Nigerian tribes. The girls, Immaculate Ebube Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, mentored by their coach, John Onuigbo, triumphed over teams from all 36 states.
The girls’ talent shone brightly throughout the competition. They started at the state level where they aced the Anambra state competition, then proceeded to conquer the Southeastern regional championship, defeating teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu, to make it to the national finals.
Their exceptional project and skills impressed judges throughout, culminating in a thrilling national victory against strong contenders from the six geopolitical zones of the country. Rivers and Lagos states secured the second and third-place positions, respectively.
The emotions are still fresh. Immaculate Ebube Ikegwuonu, her voice trembling with excitement, expressed yesterday, “We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school that motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”
Reacting to the win, The director of St. John Vianney Science College, Rev Fr Emmanuel Obimma (Ebube Muo Nso), overwhelmed with joy, shared, “This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride. It exemplifies our commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields. As a science college, we understand the impact of technology and empower students to use it as a force for good. Hence, this win isn’t coming as a surprise. It’s the result of years of hard work.”
“This victory is a testament to the dedication and talent of these young girls. We are glad to have been part of their journey. They have not only showcased their technical skills but also their ability to innovate and problem-solve,” remarked Idika Chidinma Ukpai, Operations Lead of Kodex Africa.
