Six indigent students from Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) in Ijanikin were recently given scholarships by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at both the national and branch levels.
The scholarship awards to the indigent students were in accordance with the union’s national body’s direction that all branches carry out the activity as a form of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Ige Ajayi, head of the screening committee, said that 29 students applied online and presented hard copies of their applications to the ASUU-LASUED secretariat.
He stated that nine candidates were shortlisted for interviews, and the screening committee and ASUU-LASUED executives convened to select the six indigent students for the award.
An evaluation showed that two students earned N200,000 apiece from ASUU national, while the rest students received N100,000 each from the ASUU-LASUED branch.
In his speech, Comrade Akolade Lapite, branch chairman of ASUU-LASUED, defined the scholarship as a collaborative endeavour to support education and foster academic success.
He stated that the ASUU initiative for the scholarship award was motivated by the union’s unwavering commitment to empowering and uplifting indigent students experiencing financial hardship, and that “today, this initiative has spread its wings to LASUED, where we continue to uphold the principles of equity and access to education for all.”
Lapite reported that ASUU national generously awarded two indigent LASUED students N200,000 scholarships each.
According to him, the scholarships are more than just financial help; they represent investments in the nation’s future leaders, ensuring that skill and potential are nurtured regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds.
The chairman said that ASUU-LASUED has awarded four students with N100,000 scholarships.He emphasised the union’s commitment to promoting quality education and advocating for the rights of both students and academic staff.
He said, “The scholarships awarded are a testament to the transformative power of education and the pivotal role that ASUU plays in shaping the future of our society.”
Lapite congratulated the scholarship recipients and urged them to continue to excel and inspire others with their achievements.
He acknowledged the contributions made by members of ASUU-LASUED and urged them to continue to work together towards a brighter and inclusive future for education in the country.
Amusan Iseoluwa, in the Primary Education Studies with 3.80 CGPA, said the award is a testament to dedication, hard work and commitment to excellence in academic.
She said, “We are proud to be the part of this prestigious institution and to have contributed to its growth and success. We hope our achievement will inspire future generations of scholars and academics to strive for excellence and make a positive impact in their respective field.
Amusan, from Ibadan in Oyo State said she would use the money to pay her tuition fee, which is the main purpose of the scholarship.
Ajetunmobi Odunayo Oluwakemisola, from the Department of Physics, lauded ASUU national for the award, stating, “I feel so good and glad to be the first among the recipients of the scholarship.”
“This serves as great opportunity to me and to people, who are having negative thought about ASUU. I want us to know that ASUU is not all about strike that we all think they are. I am also using this medium to give a special thanks to ASUU national and ASUU-LASUED chapter for giving me this scholarship,” she added.
