ASUU calls off its intended strike in AKSU

The scheduled industrial action in Akwa Ibom State has been suspended by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The union took the resolution in response to Governor Umo Eno’s intervention to address some of their issues, according to a statement made on Wednesday by Mr. Ekerete Udoh, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Umo Eno.

He mentioned that the governor met at Government House, Uyo, with a group of labour leaders from Akwa Ibom State University, and that during the meeting, the governor pledged to construct some strategic roads within the main campus at Ikot Akpaden, as well as to offset the 13th month salary bonus and three months of palliative care.

The governor tasked the Labour leaders with collaborating closely with the government in delivering Akwa Ibom State residents with democratic dividends.

He described the University as the pride of the State and tasked the University’s management to utilize the internally generated revenue to execute some tasks, maintaining that government will always pay the monthly subvention as and when due.

Led by Comrade (Elder) Sunny James, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Labour Congres, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Dr. Inyang Udosen, the Chairperson of ASUU, AKSU chapter and others, the ASUU leaders lauded the Governor for his “labour-friendly” tendencies and assured that the planned strike will be called off.

“We thank the governor for being a labour friendly governor and for promising to address some of the contending issues.

“We will no longer continue with our planned strike since the governor is willing to address a number of the contentious issues,” the statement noted.
