CRASSH 2025 British Academy International Fellowship Programme

The Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge is inviting applications for the British Academy International Fellowship scheme.

This two-year fellowship, organised by the British Academy, aims to attract and retain emerging international talent in the UK, fostering a globally connected and dynamic research community. The programme supports early-career researchers from around the world to conduct their studies in the UK, encouraging innovative and high-quality research while offering opportunities for professional development.

Requirements for CRASSH British Academy International Fellowship

Applicants should ensure that they meet the following requirements:

  • Have a PhD, or applicants in the final stages of their PhD will be accepted provided that the PhD will be completed (including viva) before the start date of the Fellowship. Confirmation of award of the PhD will be required before any Fellowship award is confirmed.
  • Applicants should have no more than seven years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry).
  • Be working outside the UK.
  • Not hold UK citizenship.
  • Be competent in oral and written English.
  • Have a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research proposal agreed with a UK host researcher.

The 2025 scheme notes will be published shortly; however, you may wish to review the 2024 scheme notes.

Application and Selection Criteria

Researchers may apply for a British Academy International Fellowship through CRASSH if their proposed project adopts a highly interdisciplinary approach, making it difficult to align with a specific department, faculty, or centre within Cambridge. Applicants must provide a compelling explanation of why Cambridge and CRASSH are the most suitable institutions to host their research.

It should be noted that CRASSH receives a significant number of applications annually. Due to limited workspace availability, only a small proportion of these can be submitted to the British Academy for consideration. If your project aligns well with another department, faculty, or centre at Cambridge, it might be advantageous to apply there. Successful applicants hosted by other Cambridge departments or faculties are still welcome to participate in the full range of activities offered at CRASSH.

Application Deadline

February 7, 2025

How to Apply

Applications should consist of the following:

  • A two-page CV, including the dates on which you had your PhD viva and on which you were awarded the PhD.
  • A list of publications (not exceeding one side).
  • A completed internal selection form.
  • The name and contact details of one referee, preferably based in the UK, who is not your mentor or PhD supervisor.
