The Federal Polytechnic in Ede, Osun State On Friday, 9,150 new students matriculated into various courses of study at the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels.
Engr. Dr. Man Yahaya Sani, the institution’s Rector, presented two National Diploma students with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average with monetary gifts of N200,000 apiece.
The students are Waliu Babatunde Bamidele from the Department of Library and Information Science and Babatunde Joshua Ifeoluwa, a Mechanical Engineering student with a 3.98 CGPA.
Sanni in his speech, said the management is committed to providing an all-round education in a conducive, friendly teaching and learning environment.
The Rector observed that only 59.5% of candidates who expressed interest in studying at the Polytechnic were subsequently admitted.
He also stated that the polytechnic had won 18 additional programmes at the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels, bringing the total to 64.
The Rector advised the new intake to follow in the footsteps of the cash gift recipients and avoid unscrupulous companies that could cause them to break the institution’s laws and regulations, jeopardising their admission.
“My dear matriculating students, I want to congratulate and welcome you all for finally making it here despite the tedious and rigorous processes that you passed through. You indeed struggled to scale the hurdles of Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) and of course our own Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (POST-UTME) Screening before gaining admission to this prestigious Polytechnic.
“I must not fail to tell you loud and clear that the Polytechnic has zero tolerance for cultism and other sundry anti-social vices i.e. riot, looting, arson, disobedience, examination malpractices, drug abuse, drunkenness, cheating, disrespect for constituted authorities, indecent dressing etc.
“The ban on students’ vehicles as well as vehicles with tinted glasses and unregistered vehicles is still in force. Avoid them all. Also, avoid bad companies that can lure you into them. I want to charge you to believe in yourself and your God-given ability and be focused in the face of distractions so as not to lose sight of your mission.
“As management, we know we have a responsibility to give you an all-round education in a conducive, friendly teaching and learning environment. We are committed to this and we shall continue to improve on these at every opportunity.
“However, as students, you also have a responsibility to ensure that the conducive, friendly teaching and learning environment is not abused by any form of aluta or unwarranted disturbance that could lead to the extension of your two-year stay on this campus. The Polytechnic has made you to pass through the required and needed orientation while the Students Affairs Division has equally given you the necessary sensitization to make your stay significant and worthwhile.
“I am proud to inform this august gathering that the Polytechnic, in fulfilling its determination to provide more academic opportunities in the areas that are of national importance and development, secured approval to offer additional 18 new programmes at both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels with effect from 2023/2024 academic session.”
The Rector while appreciating the significant intervention of President Bola Tinubu through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), called for more support from well-meaning Nigerians for the Polytechnic to attain its dreams and aspirations.
