Enugu State Hands Over 30 Buses to Science, Technical, and Vocational Schools

The Enugu State Government has officially handed over 30 school buses to various Science, Technical, and Vocational institutions across the state.

At the same time, the state’s governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, made a promise to revamp the entire education system in the state, aiming to make it the best in the nation.

While presenting the buses to school principals during a ceremony held in Enugu over the weekend, Governor Mbah explained that the initiative is part of his administration’s focus on improving education and supporting both teachers and learners in every part of the state.

Represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Education Innovation and also the Director of Exponential Learning for Enugu Smart Green Schools, Dr. Chinyere Onyishi, Governor Mbah emphasized that the buses are intended to assist educators in carrying out their responsibilities and to eliminate the obstacle of distance.

He noted that the education system in Enugu has made tremendous progress under his administration, shown by the allocation of 33% of the state’s budget to education for two straight years, aimed at empowering students to compete globally.

“What is happening in Enugu State is transformational. Today, the educational level has shifted from content memorisation to creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. You can see that everything is revolutionising, and Enugu State is taking the lead. Our target is to make sure that our children compete effectively anywhere in the world.”

“The buses we are handing over to each of the schools today is to make sure that everything is working well and that distance won’t be a barrier while carrying out your official duties. With these, you can move around, discharging your duties without any problem arising from transportation,” he said.

Earlier at the event, Dr. Amaka Ngene, who serves as the Chairperson of the Science, Technical and Educational Management Board, praised the governor’s impact on education, describing his approach as one driven by “disruptive innovation” and pledged that the board would work hard to realize the governor’s vision, especially regarding vocational education.

She added that principals and drivers had already been educated on how to use the buses properly and had signed a written agreement to ensure responsible use.

“We want to use this opportunity to thank His Excellency for the great work he is doing. He is a man with a passion for education, and this is a fraction of the 33% that was provided for education in his budget. We are not going to let him and the state down. We shall do everything within our powers to ensure that his dreams regarding education are actualised,” Ngene said.

Also speaking, Mr. Alumona Sylvester Chukwuemeka, Chief Supervising Principal for Nsukka Education Zone and the Principal of the Special Science School in Oghe, Ezeagu Local Government Area, expressed their deep gratitude to the governor, describing the buses as a major help to their operations.

“We don’t know how to thank the governor for this show of love. His good works are not being felt only in the area of education but in every sector of the state. We give him kudos for this work, as this will not only help the staff but will also assist them in the movement of students to perform other educational activities outside the school premises.

“We are assuring the state that these buses will be used for the purpose they were meant to serve. We will be doing the routine checks and other maintenance to enable the buses to serve us better,” they said.
