The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given its approval for every worker at public universities and other tertiary institutions to leave the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday following President Bola Tinubu’s oversight of the FEC meeting at the State House in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris announced that universities and other tertiary institutions across the nation have been given permission to stop using IPPIS.
According to him, “Today, the universities and other tertiary institutions have gotten a very big relief from the integrated personnel payroll and information system. You will recall that the university authorities and others have been clamouring for the exemption of the universities and other tertiary institutions from this system.
“Today, council has graciously approved that. What that means is that going forward, the universities and other tertiary institutions, the polytechnics and colleges of education will be taken off the IPPIS.
“What that means in simple language is that the university authorities and other tertiary institutions will now be paying their own personnel from their own end instead of relying on the IPPIS.”
Under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), university lecturers and the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari have been at odds over the IPPIS.
In 2020, ASUU chose to use the University Transparency Account System (UTAS) after going on an eight-month strike over disagreements with the federal government over the payment platform.
The Federal Government implemented the IPPIS in October 2006 as a component of its reform efforts to efficiently maintain personnel data and advance accountability and openness.
