FEC gives approval for 11 new private universities

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted provisional licences for the establishment of 11 additional private universities.

This latest approval raises the total number of private universities across the country to 150. Currently, there are 125 public universities nationwide.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, who disclosed the approvals following the FEC meeting, also announced that a temporary halt has been placed on issuing licences for new private universities.

However, he explained that institutions that are already at advanced stages in the licensing process would not be impacted by the moratorium.

“The 11 universities have been awarded provisional licences after fulfilling the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) 13-step process.”

“While a moratorium has been placed on new licenses, universities that have invested heavily and are nearing completion of the approval process will still be considered,” Alausa said.

The newly approved universities include New City University, located in Ayetoro, Ogun State; University of Fortune, situated in Igbotako, Ondo State; Eranova University, located in Mabushi within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); and Minaret University, found in Ikirun, Osun State.

Other institutions include Abubakar Toyin University, in Oke-Agba, Kwara State; Southern Atlantic University, located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; Lens University, situated in Ilemona, Kwara State; and Monarch University, based in Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State.

Also included in the approvals are Tonnie Iredia University of Communication, situated in Benin, Edo State; Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management, located in Lagos; and Kevin Eze University, situated in Mgbowo, Enugu State.
