FG Allocates N40B to Enhance Security, Power in 118 Unity Schools
The Federal Government has made significant efforts to enhance security and improve conditions in Unity Schools. To ensure the safety of students and staff, it has allocated N20 billion for perimeter fencing around all 118 federal unity colleges.
Additionally, another N20 billion has been set aside to tackle the issue of inconsistent power supply in these schools nationwide.
An analysis of the 2025 budget revealed that both projects are managed by the Federal Ministry of Education. Named ‘Provision of security infrastructure in 118 unity colleges: Perimeter new fencing’ and ‘Provision of security infrastructure in 118 unity colleges: solar new,’ each project will require N20 billion.
In 2021, the NGO Save the Children International noted that over 1,000 students had been abducted from Nigerian schools, including 80 pupils and five teachers kidnapped from Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri, Kebbi State.
In response to this initiative, Michael Magaji, President-General of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), praised the Nigerian government for its efforts. He emphasized that this initiative would enhance students’ learning experiences.
He stated: “This is well appreciated. It will give the children more time to read and improve their learning experience and learning outcomes. Security and protecting the lives of our children in school is key.”
Magaji also mentioned that “children and teachers should also be taught how to be security conscious and how to report the same to relevant authorities when they suspect there is a potential breach of security in and around the school environment.”
