President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the private sector to be more involved in the provision of quality education through adequate funding because the Federal Government alone cannot finance universities in Nigeria.
He made this known at the 2020 convocation and 72nd foundation day celebration of the University of Ibadan on Tuesday. The President, who was represented at the occasion by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof Abubakar Rasheed stated that the burden of financing education is too much for the government alone.
Furthermore, he urged universities to make themselves attractive to the private sector and design programmes that would assist the government in reducing poverty and improving the health sector.
President Buhari also cautioned Heads of Governing Councils against mismanaging the process of appointing vice-chancellors in Nigerian Universities, adding that the governing councils would be held responsible for the management or mismanagement of the process.
