The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has announced the dismissal of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State, Ohieku Salami.
The decision was attributed to conduct “unbecoming of his office” and violations of established procedures.
A statement issued by Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press for the Federal Ministry of Education, outlined several allegations against Salami.
These included his unilateral suspension of the university’s Vice-Chancellor without adherence to prescribed protocols and his refusal to rescind the action despite interventions by the ministry.
The statement further noted that Salami’s actions escalated to “abusive and threatening behaviour towards the ministry’s directors, including the Permanent Secretary,” which undermined the ministry’s supervisory authority and jeopardised the university’s governance.
Dr Alausa emphasised that such behaviour was detrimental to the institution’s stability and the principles of accountability.
To address the situation, the minister directed the appointment of a new Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman to restore order and ensure the university adheres to legal and procedural standards.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining proper governance across tertiary institutions in the country.
