FG is committed to improving the education sector – SGF

MAKURDI (Sundiata Post) – The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has said that the Federal Government is committed to improving the education sector.
Akume stated this on Thursday, in Makurdi, when he inaugurated a 500-seater lecture theatre at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM).
Represented by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, the SGF stated that the FG remained committed to prioritising education and research through sustained interventions in strategic areas.
He said the efforts were aimed at strengthening institutions and positioning them to be globally competitive.
Akume said the government would continue to engage stakeholders to ensure that future projects align with national development goals, particularly in agriculture, which remained the backbone of our economy.
He explained that the lecture theatre was built under the needs assessment projects of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
“This facility will significantly enhance research and learning in the College of Agronomy, thereby supporting food production for our nation.
“The commissioning of this facility marks a major milestone in the ongoing transformation of tertiary education in Nigeria.
“The President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government, through effective funding, has remained committed to providing the necessary infrastructural and academic support to institutions across the country.
“This project reflects the government’s strategic focus on agriculture as a key driver of economic growth, food security, and national development.
“The College of Agronomy plays a critical role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to revolutionise our agricultural sector. We are confident that this facility will greatly enhance teaching, research, and innovation.
“We recognise that executing projects of this magnitude is not always an easy task, particularly given the economic and logistical challenges that can arise.
“However, the successful completion of this project is a testament to the resilience, determination, and vision of the university management and all stakeholders involved.
“I commend the leadership of the university for its unwavering commitment to excellence in ensuring that this facility is realised and put to good use,” he said.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM) Engr Prof Isaac Itodo, said the event was part of the activities marking the 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th, and 31st combined convocation ceremony for graduates of the university.
Itodo said the lecture theatre hall would go a long way to further contribute to their research and academic work. (NAN)
