Former UI Vice Chancellor, Idowu Olayinka, Named Pro-Chancellor
Prof. Idowu Olayinka, a former vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), has been appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at West Midlands Open University, Ibadan.
During the inauguration, Prof. Olayinka was joined by other council members, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Olumide Babatope Longe, Senate Representative Air Commodore (Dr.) Akeem Adebomehin, Convocation Representative Prof. Adenike Osofisan, Mrs. Bisi Asimolowo, Mrs. Deola Ajayi, National Universities Commission (NUC) representative Dr. Ligari Gabriel Hadu, and the Registrar of the university, Adekunle Durosinmi, who also serves as the secretary of the council.
In his remarks, Olayinka expressed concern over Nigeria’s persistent high illiteracy levels, particularly in rural areas. He emphasised that distance learning could significantly reduce this burden by offering flexible and accessible educational opportunities.
“The concept of distance learning is not new to Nigeria. The country has a long history of distance education, dating back to the 19th century. Modern technology has made distance learning more effective and widespread. Distance learning can provide opportunities for unreached populations to access education, thereby increasing literacy rates,” he stated.
Vice Chancellor Longe assured that the university is dedicated to delivering education that is both accessible and impactful. He highlighted the institution’s commitment to offering affordable, high-quality, and relevant programmes aimed at advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological development.
He added that West Midlands Open University intends to redefine Nigeria’s educational landscape by creating lifelong learning opportunities that empower individuals and communities.
Earlier, the university’s founder, the Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adebayo Akande, reiterated the institution’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and nurturing future leaders.
The visitor offered prayers for the governing council members, wishing them success in their new roles.
